Do I need to
know any Hebrew to join Torah High?
For all courses except Intermediate Hebrew, students do not need to have any prior knowledge of Hebrew to join Torah High.
Beginning Hebrew assumes no prior Hebrew experience and both Jewish Belief & Ethics In The Modern World and Israel In Jewish Identity: Jewish Leadership are both taught in English in a discussion-like format. Enrollment in Intermediate Hebrew requires that the student has taken Beginning Hebrew or equivalent.
Can I be a
part of Torah High if I never attended a Jewish school?
Yes!
Torah High is open to all Jewish public high school teens regardless of
religious affiliation, background or previous Jewish education. Torah
High has a warm and accepting environment and we approach everything
with an open and honest mind and let you draw your own conclusions.
Getting Your Hours - Out of Class Options
In
order to receive British Columbia ministry approved credit,
students need to complete 95 hours of educational instruction. 70
hours are completed through the normal Torah High classes while the
other 25 hours need to be completed through Out of Class Options (OCOs).
There are three options for OCOs that students can combine together to complete their hours.
- Attending approved educational events in Vancouver: these include approved Jewish educational events hosted by a variety of local Jewish
organizations - Shabbat dinners, guest speakers, and other community
events.
- Attending NCSY Shabbatons, events, and trips: including Shabbatons in Vancouver, Edmonton, Seattle, and Portland, trips to New York or Los Angeles, and many local events. The schedule will be provided in class.
- Completing an independent study of an approved book related to class: This option involves 12 hours of independent study and a written report. Students can only complete one book report per course.
Further details will be provided in class.
Additionally, throughout the year, Torah High typically provides various
other programs that can offer hours. Information about these options
will be provided to the students as they occur. For more information
about these programs, or for special considerations, please contact the
Torah High office at 604-736-7607 Ext. 315

Any tests?
Don't
sweat it! There might be a review quiz or short
essay on the material studied in class about once a month. Like any
other accredited course, there will be a mid-term and final test or
project.
I'm hungry.
Any food?
We
know it has been a long day, so every week snacks and drinks are
served. We serve different food every week including pizza, donuts,
cookies, chips, pretzels, and fruit.
Great! When
do we start?
Classes
begin on the second week of September. Students can register and join
courses to earn credit until the 6th class, though they may need to
make up missed classes.
Can I start
in the second semester?
Yes! Courses run for one semester only, so new students can join Torah High in January, and continuing students can start a new course.
Any fees?
There
is a $199 registration fee for each credit course. All classes, food, and materials are included, but other extra-curricular trips or
activities may have a nominal fee.
How and when
will my home school be informed that I am registered in Torah High?
A
letter informing your school guidance department that you are
registered in a Torah High course will be sent in the beginning of
December.
How and when
are the credits sent to my home school?
Students
who complete the course requirements by June 15 will have their credits
sent to their school over the month of July. Students in Grade 12 will
have their credits sent to their school over the last two weeks of June.
